ASPERGER'S FOR BEGINNERS
I realized recently that anyone new to Asperger's Syndrome would find very little
in my site on what Asperger's is and how it effects the lives of those who have it and even the lives of those who live with an
Aspie (a nickname for Asperger's). I 'm so sorry for overlooking such a obvious thing. But my intention was to first
give hope.
Asperger's Syndrome is a high funtioning form of autism and has many of the
following characteristics and can also be found in Tony Attwood's ASPERGER'S SYNDROME: A GUIDE for Parents and
Professionals
Social Behavior Red Flags
- Inability to interact with peers
- lack of desire to interact with peers.
- unable to understant social cues.
- socially and emotionally inappropriate behavior.
- limited used of body language and facial expresion
- clumsy body language
- peculiar stiff gaze
Language Red Flags
- Delayed developement in speech
- superficially perfect expressive language -uses adult
vocabulary but may not understand it.
- odd prosody, peculiar voice characteristics.
- formal pedantic language
- impairments in comprehension, including
misinterpretations of literal / implied meanings
You can usually tell a Aspie after just a few moments of him/her walking into a room.
There will just be something different about them but you can't put you finger on what it is (pardon the idiom, another Aspie
road block)
