To The Blessing!
My
journey into and through the world of Asperger's Syndrome began the day I gave birth to my first beautiful child, Brett.
When he was between the ages of 3 and 6 I had been
told that Brett was learning disabled, had ADHD, autism (some what correct), anxiety disorder, poor parenting,
and finally PDD/NOS. None of these ever rang completely true to me. By the time I had written two children's books
focusing on language for kids with special needs it was five years later and I still felt that I didn't know the truth about
Brett. So, two months before his 12th birthday we jumped at the chance to have Brett diagnosed by the world's leading
authority on Asperger's Syndrome, Tony Attwood. Our whole family flew to Las Vegas to tape a diagnostic assessment of
Brett with Dr. Attwood. By the time the taping was over all the pieces of the puzzle had fallen into place.
I knew, as only a mother can know, that the past diagnosis' were wrong and Asperger's was right. At the end
of the assessment, Dr. Attwood said, "Congratulations! He has Asperger's Syndrome." He meant this and I knew why.
I see wonderful qualities and amazing abilities in Brett, (basically he's awesome!)and I feel so blessed that he was
born to me and my husband. I try to focus on those things while we work on the difficulties he faces.
